The way we work

Why do our people enjoy working with office stationery so much? Is it because they’ll never be caught short without a pen, or something to write on? Is it because they can wax lyrical down the pub about the benefits of a cross cut paper shredder versus a strip cut shredder? Or is it because they relish being part of a business which values and rewards their hard work? Yep, you guessed it, it’s all of these and more.

Here are a few other reasons why our people look forward to work every morning.

All our staff, whether they’re based in one of our stores, our distribution centres or at Head Office, are given plenty of responsibility and ownership. Of course, we provide all the training they need to become experts in their area. But when it comes to the nitty gritty of dealing with a customer query on the shop floor, or giving a new head office initiative the green light, we trust them to make the right decision.

We’ve all experienced great customer service. Remember how good it felt? It doesn’t take much, but if done properly you can make someone feel like the most important person in the world. That’s what our store teams aim for day-in-day-out, and they get just as much of a buzz from their work as our customers do.

There’s no getting away from it, our stores can get pretty busy. And our distribution teams often have to move pretty quickly too. To work well in these fast-paced environments, you need to be the sort of person who thrives on the buzz of being busy. If you enjoy being kept on your toes, we’ll guarantee that you’ll never be sat around twiddling your thumbs.

To some, the process of selling conjures up images of second-hand car dealers. Not us. We have a tried and tested sales training programme called Staples Inspirational Selling Skills (SISS). It teaches our store teams how to pin point their customers’ exact requirements, then find the appropriate product or service to meet them. So even if all a customer needs is a new stapler, we’ll give them just as much care and attention as we would someone who wanted to deck out an entire office block.

Could you get pumped up about post-it notes? Our people certainly can. We want them to have a passion for our products, services and customers. The more enthusiastic they are, the more excited our customers will get. And an excited customer is more likely to tell their friends about the great time they had down at Staples.
